Quick post to let you all know that the carp on the res have certainly woken up this week and are feeding very well which is a good sign for the year! Hopefully they wont start spawning just yet and the first few weeks will be extremely good.

There has also been literally hundreds of smaller fish moving around later in the evenings so for all you non carpers (are there any???) you should be able to fill yer boots if you fish in the evenings. Smaller hooks and lighter lines fished anywhere from 6 - 10 meters should produce the usual suicidal perch, roach with a good chance of tench and crucians.

Get your permits ASAP!

you are considering taking out some of your 10lb + carp &
replacing them with some smaller hand sized carp if you can find

Having fished the Rez over 4 decades i was suprised by the addition of carp to the water. But i was more suprised when they were successful in their takeover bid in a water that has never been a prolific fishery. When i first fished the water 1966 with my dad and uncle my first fish was a very memorable bream of 9lb good start. but as you will know these fish are probably are long gone in those days the fishing was not easy but every blue moon the bream would get caught and the odd tench, roach rudd perch and crucians made up the majority of catches but not in great numbers. If you caught an eel on friday nights match you won. Before the carp i would estimate the average match winning weight would be 2lbs and im probably being generous with my guess. Many good people have tried to improve the Rez over the years and i hope they keep trying, But it seems that the carp are thriving in the water so why change it.
just for the record i do fish for the carp but don't mind what i catch but it seems carp are my best bet

Below is the report from the fishery consultant about the water survey

With reference my recent visit to the reservoir, i believe we caught approximately 60-70% of the larger fish. There is a great number of carp over ten pounds, and this is having a detrimental affect on the other species. Whilst there is little marginal cover for the juvenile fish to hide from predators and the elements, this is something that i would make a priority. 2 days hard work, waders on and getting wet, distributing the existing iris beds into small clusters around the margins of the reservoir would be a great start. Done properly this would create a much better habitat for all the fish. Apply well rotted manure around the margins, 2 tonne would be ok.
You could also apply 1 tonne of calcium carbonate all over the surface each year. These tasks will make the water more nutrient rich and further improve the water quality to encourage fry survival of other species.
The amount of other species caught was minimal. I believe the best course of action, given the that the club wishes to manage the water as a pleasure fishery, would be to remove a good percentage of the existing carp, and replace them with smaller fish. This process could then be done whenever the average size gets to big. Also, if you undertake the other tasks properly, the fish will have a much greater chance of producing fry that may survive, giving you more fish to utilise.
Once you start to take an active approach to the basic fishery management of the reservoir, you will be rewarded and see your hard work pay off year after year.

TAKING OR PUTTING FISH IN THE RESERVOIR.

We have had people putting fish into the reservoir with out the proper steps ( EI ,Movement papers from the environment agency) if we prove the cases against these persons we will have no other option but to take legal action ,and they if proved will be barred from the reservoir for life.wilst netting the other day we came across a pike of around 6 -7 lbs this fish has not been put in the res during an of are restocking programs, this proves that fish have been put into the reservoir by a person or persons unknown .This proves the justification of the netting , we health checked the fish when they were in the nets and all but one fish was returned to the water( that was the pike).we were also looking for certain fish as we were there ,we spotted a few of the fish on the web site but there were a few fish we couldn't see ( this could be down to them escaping the net) or the case of fish being taken as i said at the beginning of this article. if we find that fish are being taken by a person or persons unknown the same thing as the putting fish into the res ,if proven they will be barred from the club for life. (REMEMBER THAT IF FISH ARE PLACED INTO THE RES WITHOUT PERMISSION AND HEALTH CHECKS ,THEY CAN SPREAD DISIESE) safeguard your water tell some one on the committee ,or one of the bailiffs.
THANK YOU .
