Having fished the Rez over 4 decades i was suprised by the addition of carp to the water. But i was more suprised when they were successful in their takeover bid in a water that has never been a prolific fishery. When i first fished the water 1966 with my dad and uncle my first fish was a very memorable bream of 9lb good start. but as you will know these fish are probably are long gone in those days the fishing was not easy but every blue moon the bream would get caught and the odd tench, roach rudd perch and crucians made up the majority of catches but not in great numbers. If you caught an eel on friday nights match you won. Before the carp i would estimate the average match winning weight would be 2lbs and im probably being generous with my guess. Many good people have tried to improve the Rez over the years and i hope they keep trying, But it seems that the carp are thriving in the water so why change it.
just for the record i do fish for the carp but don't mind what i catch but it seems carp are my best bet
Best regards codhead
hello cod head, thanks for your information on the res. i have been looking through the res books and like you have said the weights in the matches were at the least diere.
we introduced the carp to the res about ten to twelve years ago as a trial to see how they would take to the res ,as you can see they have survived well .we as a committee look at all angles to help to keep the upkeep of the res as best we can, that neans the wellfare of the fish stocks .
If we decide to take fish out of the res it will be well talked over and not taken lightly, if fish were removed then fish of other or the same spiecies would be re-introduced (but a smaller size nothing under one pound will be put back into the res).
i hope you will carry on fishing the res ,and i also hope you understand that we are doing are best to keep the res up to scratch.

Hi Alan, A bit more imfo for you, in the early 70s there was lots of cover for fry going out 8 to 10 foot in places but some people got a bit carried away with drags. Then in the late 70s there was the small lily that took over the place, But since that was finally got rid of there has been no proper cover for fry to hide in, This is probably the main problem so hopfully solve this and the water will get better and better
so best of luck with what will be a difficult task.
On an other note last year i fished a water which only had carp in it
i have never fished a water with so many fish in it. The carp had been breeding sucsessfully for years, As a match water you could not go wrong fish a chuck, Fish were from 3oz upwards to 30lbs plus. There was no weed in the water just 3 foot of iris and bullrushes all the way round. So why were these fish so sucsessful year after year. After speaking to the owner he had discovered that it was a spring fed lake lots of minerals.
His problem is stoping them breeding and growing on the carp. But he is making a good living out of selling wild carp commons and mirrors!!
Hi mate , the reason that commercial fisheires are so good at breeding there fish is like you say the cover for one and the water clarity is another.
you go on the res some days and you can see all the fish around the edges, but what some people dont realise is if you can see the fish they can also see you and will get out of the way.
while people walk on the top bank in full veiw of the fish they are cutting down there chances of netting a few fish as you well know.thats the main reason that we are now getting things going with the plants and trees round the margins of the water.
As we said before it all takes time so we will see over time and keep fingers crossed.
We will keep trying till we get things right hopefully ,it dosnt happen over night so we have to start somewhere.
by the way what place were you fishing at.
Hi Pal,
The water i fished was just outside Fordingbridge in Hampshire can't remember the name but details would be available from Fordingbridge.
The water was not run as a commercial just a day ticket fished by caravaners from local touring parks. Its a little gem well worth a visit
